Welcome to Germany's best Grand Hotel (2024). The "Breidenbacher Hof" was rated the best "Grand Hotel" by "Die 101 Besten". Member of "Small Luxury hotels of the world", the "Breidenbacher Hof" promises an elegant ambience, excellent dining options, heartfelt friendliness and top service.
What makes the hotels so special that it was rated the best "Grand Hotel" and what actually is a "Grand Hotel"?
Since there is no commonly acknowledged definition of a "Grand Hotel", we need to come up with our own expectation and try to find words to describe what a "Grand Hotel" should look like, what it should offer and most importantly, how does it make you feel as a guest.
The "Grand" in "Grand Hotel" can mean big but in this case most likely "great", since the hotel offers (only) 85 elegant rooms and 21 suites. The "Breidenbacher Hof" is located in the city center of Duesseldorf and is just opposite the metro station "Heinrich-Heine-Allee". Whatever your choice of transportation is, the hotel is easy to reach and offers a parking garage, which comes with a fee of course.

Design and style of the hotel is elegant, opulent "Belle - Époque" with shining marble floors and staircase, artistically forged stair railing, chandeliers and upholstered soft sofas and armchairs.
When you first walk into the hotel, you are greeted by an enormous flower arrangement and an amazing blue carpet with a huge "Breidenbacher Hof" emblem on it.
There is no doubt, that the brand "Breidenbacher Hof" will accompany you throughout your stay and that the staff is committed to do everything possible, to fulfill the promise of excellence, so that you stay pleasantly connection to their emblem.
The interior decor is similar to palaces or elegant mansions and makes you feel, like you are yourself a member of the "high society".

The friendly reception by the staff is doing its part to make sure, that as long as you are guest of the "Breidenbacher Hof" you indeed are a member of that exclusive club. Going through the golden door in the reception are, you are indeed in an exclusive guest area, which is called "The Living Room". A lounge area with nice seating possibilities and the chance for drinks and bites, relax, work or welcome your own guests. The "living room" is the working place for your "personal assistants", that you can turn to with probably every topic that might come to your mind.
After the formalities, you will be accompanied to your room and will be shown around with explanation of all electronic devices and control panels. The rooms are spacious, even the lowest category comes with a minimum of 40 sqm, which is larger than many other hotel rooms, especially in big cities.

A size that is needed, since the King bed alone has very generous measures, that definitely exceed the minimum required 1.80m width and 2.00 m length for a 5* hotel. From your bedside you can control lights, curtains and air conditioning with just a fingertip on the control panel, without the need to get out of this comfortable bed.
The room offers a big desk with a swivel chair that lets you work comfortably from your room and you do not have to go to the lounge area. The WiFi offered is high speed and it keeps its promise. It was really fast and absolutely no waiting time.
The room also has a big flat screen TV with international tv channels, information about the hotel, radio stations and an attached sound bar for better sound.
Minibar and snacks are complimentary, Nespresso coffee machine and a kettle to boil water for your tea, are also part of the room amenities. Different lighting possibilities illuminate the room with a cozy light and you can adjust it just as you like.
A comfortable seating arrangement with a coffee table rounds up the "living room".
Next to the size of the room and the impressive king bed, the bathroom is another highlight. A beautifully designed marble bath room, with an extra room for the rain shower and an extra room

for toilet and bidet. Multi usage big bottles of shampoo, hand soap, conditioner and body milk by "The grown alchemist" and of course all the amenities you might need in case you do not bring your own, or your luggage gets lost.

The mirrors on the right and left side are doors that you can open to find the hairdryer, the vanity mirror and some shelves for you to store your own items.
The size of the bathroom is quite spacious and inviting to have a nice bath or a long and extensive shower.
Let's head for the SPA and Gym. The "Breidenbacher Hof" offers an indoor pool and a nicely equipped gym. The pool is not very large in size but big enough to have a nice dip into the water for refreshment. If you are a passionate swimmer, this pool might not fit your needs.
In the SPA area you will also find a steam bath, a sauna, and various rooms for treatments.

In case you like to using the sauna, you have the option to use the sauna in the locker room which is for women only.

After sauna or steam bath, you can enjoy the different shower options with massage function, everything to make you feel completely relaxed and rejuvenated after your wellness "time-out".
We stayed only for an hour but it was absolutely worth taking the time and have a short break from our busy routine.
Since our stay in Duesseldorf lasted only one night, we did not bring work out clothes to use the gym. But we did take a look inside, and it is a nicely equipped fitness room with the latest cardio

machines and weight lifting devices.
The room is not big but you will find enough place to work out, even if you do not use the machines and prefer to do Pilates or other strenghtening exercise.
A nice touch is the "Breidenbacher Hof" Emblem which is embroidered to each and every seat you find in the gym.
That is an attention to detail we have not seen in many hotels so far.
After so much workout, it is time to have a nice dinner in the Lobby Bar. The "Duchy" Restaurant is closed on Mondays, but nevertheless we are looking forward to a nice evening in the Looby Bar that offers the same menu as the restaurant "Duchy" does. Let us see what the chef can offer tonight.
As a starter, we decided for the Burrata which was creamy and rich and as a balance it was served with a salad and "fruity" dressing, with grapefruit and other citrus fruits. This came with a

bread basket of homemade bread and butter with "Duchy" logo. A very nice detail.

Salad and burrata were delicious. All dishes can be ordered as a small or "normal" portion, for the salmon we chose the small portion, because we wanted to leave some room for dessert.
As main dish we had the "Zedernholz - smoked" Salmon, which was caramelized with brown

sugar on top, had a mustard honey sauce and came with a fresh salad.
The "smoked" taste was not really there but in general a nice dish, the fish was well cook but still juicy and the presentation of the dishes was very colorful and appealing. Paired with a glass of German Riesling this was the perfect dinner.
As dessert we had a pistachio parfait with strawberries and "waldmeister". The "construction" of the dessert looks beautiful but unfortunately this was the weakest of the dishes of the evening and a bit of a disappointment. The strawberries on top were kind of dry and you can see that the "green" leaves of the strawberries are not green any more and the strawberries themselves look as if they had been on that plate for a very long time.

The strawberry glaze on the pistachio parfait was more like a chewing gum and did not taste good at all, so we left it on the side. The parfait itself was not fresh, the edge of the parfait tasted like old cream and had this gummy like consistency.
In general the dessert was not freshly made at all and therefore no highlight apart from the beautifully way they presented it.
Now it is time to go for a short walk in the "Altstadt" of Duesseldorf and go to the Rhine promenade.
When we came back to the room, we noticed that the hotel left us a chocolate bar at our door as some sort of goodnight sweet, which was a nice touch. Finally, we can try the amazing king bed and see how comfortable the night will be.
Next day, after a relaxing night in this wonderful bed, we went to breakfast in the "Duchy" restaurant which was closed the night before. The restaurant is designed in a very elegant

brasserie style and looks really inviting with the upholstered chairs and seating areas. It is designed in a way, to have only a limited amount of chairs and tables next to each other and then some separation for more privacy. The color scheme and the lighting give this place a wonderful relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere.

The breakfast buffet is rich with many cold cuts and some limited hot food options. For egg dishes you can see the menue at your table and they have a special counter for fresh fruit cuts. The buffet is not the biggest breakfast buffet I have ever seen but it offers enough variety and paired with the beautifully designed restaurant it is a wonderful relaxing and delicious experience.
After breakfast it is time to leave and check out of the hotel.

When you check out of the hotel, the staff from the reception will accompany you until your car, taxi or other transfer to say goodbye and round up the wonderful hospitality you will experience in the "Breidenbacher Hof".
We have not experienced that in any other hotel but now that we think about it, it certainly makes sense to say goodby in the same personal way as they welcomed us. The "Breidenbacher Hof" team practices that in a very personalized and perfectly trained manner and gives you the feeling you enter or leave the home of a friend.
The attention to detail is evident everywhere and makes the difference. All processes are thoughtfully designed and carried out from beginning until the end and do not stop somewhere in between.
Let us sum up our stay and see what are our highlights:
Belle - Epoque elegant and opulent design of the interior in all areas of the hotel (except Spa and Gym which are quite modern).
Large rooms and very large beds.
Outstanding service by staff and "personal assistants".
Attention to detail.
